For people who love waterfalls, but prefer not to exert too much energy, Friends of DuPont Forest hosts Tour de Falls twice a year in order to allow visitors access to spectacular North Carolina waterfalls to which cars can not usually travel.
DuPont Forest, located just outside Asheville, N.C., between Hendersonville and Brevard, is state owned and remote. It has one major road crossing one side of its 10,415 mountainous acres. Another road or two nip the boundaries.
Except for a couple of weekends each year, most of the land is accessible only to hikers, horseback riders and those who ride bicycles.
DuPont Forest is so scenic that parts of it have been used in the filming of The Last of the Mohicans that starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.
For Tour de Falls, the Friends group arranges for buses to transport sightseers to waterfalls which they may never see any other way. Normally, the tour is held each year over Mother’s Day weekend and in mid-October.
For the fall tour on Oct. 17-18, 2010, the weather was perfect, and it was peak leaf season. This resulted in a peak number of visitors for the tour. On Saturday, Oct. 17, 730 people showed up, and 675 people took the tour on Sunday, according to Kent Wilcox, president of Friends of DuPont Forest.
A normal tour weekend averages 800 to 1,000 people, Wilcox said.
