Price comparison site Gocompare.com has seen a significant increase in the number of people joining Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the last 12 months.
The number of Gocompare.com customers declaring membership of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme when getting home insurance quotes increased 38 per cent in 2011
In light of this increase, Gocompare.com conducted some research** to find out more. The survey found that 59 per cent of those who are members of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme think that their membership is worthwhile,18 per cent think it’s a good way to stay in touch with their neighbours and just two per cent think it’s ‘just for nosy people’.
The research also highlights some of the benefits of Neighbourhood Watch membership, such as looking out for elderly neighbours (31 per cent), minding each other’s houses during holidays (38 per cent) and having a network of neighbours that can be called upon in an emergency (28 per cent).
But it’s not just Neighbourhood Watch members who look out for each other. 46 per cent of respondents said that they have a good relationship with at least one of their neighbours and 44 per cent would help a neighbour out if they were in need. A mere two per cent would do nothing if they heard a neighbour’s alarm going off.
However, when it comes to leaving our homes empty, the research shows that just under a third (32 per cent) of Brits ask their neighbours to take in their post whilst they’re on holiday. And despite this relationship with our neighbours, four per cent say they would be more likely to update their Facebook status than tell their neighbours if they were going away. And over a quarter of Brits (27 per cent) admit to updating their status on social networks when they are out and about.
Mark Greening, head of home insurance at Gocompare.com says: “It’s great to see that both community and security in the home is becoming increasingly important in Britain.
“We would encourage those people who are not members of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme to seriously consider becoming part of an official group. As well as strengthening the community and helping you get to know more people in your local area, active membership could, in some cases, help reduce your home insurance premium. Improving your home’s security by pulling together can only be a good thing.”
