Metropolitan Group Property Casualty

Congress has approved a $32 billion appropriations bill for the Interior Department. It includes about $9 million in matching funds to help preserve Civil War battlefields.

The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT), just one of the groups fighting to rescue battlefields threatened by development, has saved more than 28,000 acres in 20 states. The Central Virginia Battlefield Trust has preserved almost 900 acres. These groups and other Civil War preservationists assert that about 30 acres of battlefield land are lost each day and that additional efforts and funds are needed to save historic land from the bulldozers.

Preservation at Chancellorsville

CWPT recently announced the beginning of a $2.125 million national campaign to preserve one of the most historically significant unprotected landscapes of the entire war. The Wagner Tract, and 85-acre property, was the scene of a bloody struggle during the battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. It was here that Confederate General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson led his legendary flanking maneuver that turned the tide of this battle in favor of the Confederacy.
