Property Condition Report
The vast gap between Brazil’s rich and poor is apparent in its metropolitan areas; the unequal property distribution of the colonial era has left a lasting imprint of physical segregation, in which the landless have been relegated to large favelas (slums) in the urban periphery.
Favelas are areas of substandard housing, often built illegally on a city’s periphery, with poor access to infrastructure and basic services. The difference between elite urban dwellers and favelados (slum dwellers) in Brazilian cities is evident in the gap in their respective incomes and quality of life.
Characteristics of a Favela
Understanding the inequality inherent in the city core/favela division and the low quality of life within a favela requires a deeper understanding of the conditions characteristic of a Brazilian slum. In countries like Brazil, losing access to the city center and being relegated to a favela is a massive loss of opportunity.
